W is for Women’s Work

Deborah Eddy discusses her work, W is for Women’s Work, installed on Outer Space Berwick St Windows.

Deborah playfully comments on gender inequality and the invisible work that women do. Taking the a symbol of household work - the apron - she transforms it into a political statement in this larger-than-life work.

Eddy uses sewing, weaving, knitting and embroidering in making the costumes for her performance works. The 1950s style apron she dons in these images is made from high-vis materials, which are often associated with male labour. In doing so, she highlights the need for women’s work to become more visible.
